Dance Class Descriptions


Youth & Adult 2013-2014 Dance Programs

Pre – Ballet/ Foundation & Technique Ages 3 - 8

Students start their dance training by learning dance positions, discipline and staging.

Ballet

Ballet is the "backbone" of all dance training. In ballet the student will learn grace, elegance, technique, discipline, flexibility, stamina, and endurance. We strongly feel that ballet is the most important dance form that a child or adult can study. (9 & Older)

Ballet & Pointe

Ballet & Pointe is a combined class that continues Ballet education and incorporates Pointe. (Level Class)

Jazz

Jazz uses sharp and fluid movements to create a visually technical dance and style. It is usually done to popular music. Body isolations, stretching, turning, leaping, and technical steps are taught in this class. Ages 3& Older

Modern

Modern is focused on creative self-expression with characterized techniques. Ages 12 & Older.

Tap

Tap is one of the oldest dance forms in this country. Students are taught rhythms, timing, and leg/foot coordination done to various types of music. Ages 5 & Older

African Dance

African Dance is influenced by West African Dance. Workshops are included with this class. Ages 10 & older.

Brown Sugar

Brown Sugar Southern styled jazz and marching band dance. The students must be taking a technique class to assist with their movements (Jazz or Ballet). This class is good for discipline, precision and team work. This class can also assist with dance scholarships at Colleges with Band Programs. Ages 6 & Older

Cheer Dance

This form of movement is intended to improve the skills of future cheerleaders, as well as, prepare them for competition. Cheer dance is a mixture of jumps, stunts, technique, precision and attitude. This class is fun on any level and could easily transfer to college programs that offer scholarships to cheerleaders and dance teams. Ages 8& Older

Fusion (New)

A new innovative form of dance with a combination of hip-hop – Contemporary and soft acrojets. (Summer Course for Boys only) Ages 9 & Older

Hip-Hop

Hip Hop is designed to help the dancer loosen up, gain rhythm, and have fun. This is a great way to get a good workout, have fun, and gain confidence. This is an extra class that should be taken along with regular technique classes, however, hip-hop is extremely commercial and good for future stars on every level. Ages 6 & Older

Lyrical

Lyrical is a fluid form of dance done to ballads and slower contemporary music. The dancer is taught to interpret his or her movement with feeling, motion, and style. They will learn to tell a story or create a picture of the song. This style combines the fluid beauty of ballet with the sharper moves of jazz. A ballet or Jazz class is recommended along with lyrical to build on technique. Ages 12 & Older

Liturgical

This class covers many dance techniques that are preformed to praise and worship music. Ages 6 & Older

Multicultural Dance

Multicultural Dance is a diverse fusion of different dance forms. Multi has a unique focus on culture, uniformity and stage presence. This genre of dance was created by and only offered at Hamden Academy of Dance and Music. Ages 6 & Older

Street Jazz

Street Jazz - Students will learn upbeat combinations of turns leaps and jumps with urban movement influences. (Summer & Fall Class) Ages 12& Older

Contemporary

Contemporary - Students will be challenged to execute very technical and emotional influences with Horton/Graham/Limon influences (Level)
